Someone asked me recently why I became a Realtor. I was traveling over 200 nights per year at my old job. My family is very important to me, so I made a decision to start my real estate life and see my children grow up.
I love helping people find and sell homes. And sometimes the challenges are huge. One particular couple received a notice of foreclose for the home they were renting. They wanted to purchase it before it went into foreclosure, but couldn’t find the landlord – he had gone incognito.
After consulting with a friend that was a real estate attorney, I advised them to pay the rent into a trust they set up and to file their lease contract to create a “cloud” on the sale.
We started negotiation with the mortgage company that financed the home in May. By August, that particular mortgage company was out of business. My clients thought after the foreclosure that they would be evicted. But we didn’t give up.
I spoke with the asset manager that had taken over the loan. He thought that it would be a straight foreclosure and my clients would need to move out once the foreclosure came through.
But in Colorado, the lease supersedes ownership and the asset manager agreed to let this couple purchase the home at a great price after he realized this – which took a while.
Before closing my clients asked if it was a done deal. And I said not quite. The day we closed I told them that NOW finally nothing could go wrong. I’d never seen such a happy couple than when we closed.
And this is why I am so happy to be a Realtor and makes my job so great. I would have done this work pro bono. It was a case of a couple that was in a lot of trouble and fear and we had a lot to overcome – months of negotiations. And I really wanted to help them and they really wanted the home. We became the best of friends. Years later they transferred out of Denver and I had the pleasure of selling their home.
I work with a huge variety of clients including military, move up and downsizing buyers plus first time homebuyers. Working with first-time homebuyers is fun. Even though I find out the specifics they want in a home, as we search, I am able to narrow down their very important wants versus what they would like to have in a home. It’s fun watching my clients get excited about a home and observe not only what they say, but how they react. And this helps me find just the right home.
But it’s the same thing with all my clients. I tend to get emotionally involved in their decisions – whether it’s a purchase or a sale. And I always advocate for them as a buyer or seller’s agent.
One of the things I love about my job is the opportunity to get involved and build relationships through different organizations including the Chamber of Commerce and the different Board of Realtors. I am currently the Chairman of the Board of the Colorado Board of Realtors.
As far as my personal life, I’m a long time resident of Aurora, Colorado and I’ve been married for many years to my wonderful wife and I have a daughter in college and a son at home.
